Butterflies

Bookmark and Share

It has been a stellar year for butterflies. I'm not sure why. The campground we are at has a lovely floral garden and that certainly has an impact, but I can't explain why they are so prolific. Friends elsewhere, such as Minnesota, have agreed on the proliferation this year.

G and I were discussing the "out of focus" backgrounds in some of my photos. I use a specific aperture setting to reduce depth of field, which yields a crisp foreground and fuzzy background. This makes the object of interest stand out. In this case it was the butterfly and the flower. I learned to do this in the old days when we shot in 35mm using something called "film". Back then I also spent many hours in the dark room developing the negatives and making prints. While the digital technology has replaced that technology, the principles of optics and the lessons I learned so long ago still apply today...

The great Monarch butterfly migration

Bookmark and Share

The Monarch butterfly migration is underway. The swallows departed several weeks ago and they are being followed by the butterflies.

Getting photos of the Monarch's isn't easy. They don't travel when it is raining. They don't travel when the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. These cold blooded, fragile creatures persevere. So when the wind shifts and the air warms, they travel by us in a steady stream.

The storms left the area early this morning and by noon the butterflies were travelling. By sunset there was a steady stream, fluttering by and buffeted by the wind currents.

It's Spring and there are butterflies!

Bookmark and Share

Now that we are well into Spring the butterflies are back. There are small, green inch worms form the moth family hanging from silk threads and then there are lots of butterflies.

Here are a few photos taken during walks this holiday weekend.
